Avalanche Instructor has a fundamental role in promoting safety in the fells and mountains for backcountry skiers and other winter recreationists. Instructor has a great opportunity to forward knowledge and skills and pass on safe procedures.

These opportunities also bring along responsibility. Instructor needs to recognize the variety of responsibilities that comes with running an avalanche course. This presentation will highlight the responsibility to run a pedagogically sound course.

Eeva Mäkelä is a senior lecturer of Adventure and Outdoor Education at Humak University of Applied Sciences. She is also FINLAV (Finnish Avalanche Education) instructor and ACMG (Association of Canadian Mountain Guides) Ski Guide.

Eeva Latosuo is an associate professor of Outdoor Studies at Alaska Pacific University and a PhD student at Simon Fraser University. She is also an avalanche educator at Alaska Avalanche School.
