What can avalanche observations tell us about the performance numerical avalanche models

Avalanche velocity is an important parameter to characterize the avalanche dynamic behavior. Observations imply that the maximum velocity of major avalanches scale with the total drop height. Combing this information with observations of runout and volume of major avalanches can provide hints on the choice of the empirical parameters of the numerical avalanche models. These models become more and standard in present-day hazard mapping procedure and therefore their dynamical understanding is crucial.
